What does an internal verifier do? An internal verifier is the person in an organisation who monitors the work of all assessors involved with a particular qualification, ensuring accuracy and consistency of activities and decisions. In a college or large institution, the internal verifier might be a full time role. In smaller institutions and companies, the internal verifier role is often taken on by an existing assessor or member of the department. The internal verifier: • ensures that assessors follow the qualification assessment guidance provided by the awarding body; • observes a sample of activities, methods and records to ensure that assessment decisions are consistent, and then provides assessors with constructive feedback on their decisions to aid continual development; • keeps up to date records of internal verification and sampling activities for the awarding body to see when necessary; • organises regular meetings between all staff involved in assessment to discuss and share best practice for continual improvement; and • implements development plans for any corrective actions required by the awarding body’s external verifier.
